I did not expect that! I have seen information about several prototypes of smartphones that are capable to achieve up to 1 Gbps throughput using LTE-Advanced networks. However, I did not think that Samsung will prepare such device right now. It turns out that Samsung Galaxy S8 is the first smartphone on the market, which will be faster than the fiber! That’s right, Samsung has decided to use the benefits of the new LTE modems and has installed up to 4 antennas in the Galaxy S8 in order to use MIMO 4×4.

When a new smartphone arrives on the market, everyone is thrilled with a better quality display and a camera that takes even better pictures. Recently we want to have the entire surface of the phone was occupied by the screen. What’s more thoughtful users are still paying attention to the chipset type, battery lifetime and the amount and type of RAM. However, almost no one analyzes the communication modules that are used in the new device. The Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are the first smartphones which have LTE 16 class modems, capable of downloading data at speeds close to 1 Gbps. How is this possible?

Samsung Galaxy S8 supports MIMO 4×4, 256 QAM modulation and carrier aggregation.

All this owes to the new chipsets, i.e. Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 and Exynos 8895. How can LTE-Advanced network reach such speed? 256 QAM modulation means that a single data stream transmitted in the 20 MHz channel has a speed of about 100 Mbps. With MIMO 2×2 we send two such streams, but with MIMO 4×4 already four. So, without carrier aggregation, MIMO 4×4 and 256 QAM provide the speed of about 400 Mbps. On the other hand, the aggregation of carriers allows for transmission of up to 10 data streams, each of 100 Mbps. T-Mobile has already shown that aggregation of 3 bands provides the desired 1 Gbps throughput. Now they repeat this feat with the new Galaxy S8. It turns out, however, that this smartphone was closed tightly during the December recording.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 supports 802.11ac Wi-Fi with 1024 QAM

However, in order to achieve the best results, you have to have fast router like e.g. Netgear AC5300 Nighthawk X8. Such kind equipment is able to fully utilize the capabilities of Samsung’s flagship in Wi-Fi network. The truth is that with the new Galaxy S8 you can easily check the speed of your Internet, if you have the right router. As you install our application on the Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+, you can be sure that the smartphone will not be a bottleneck during the test. As you will see a message indicating that you are getting close to the maximum Wi-Fi network bandwidth, the restriction will be on the router side. It’s a sign that you have to buy new equipment.
